What the AI can see
Which data does the AI read, and what does it never see?
Before turning AI on for Westlands Trading, Elly wants to know exactly what leaves the workspace and what never does.
AI in Vantage is provided by Anthropic. It is off until a workspace owner or admin turns it on, and it can be turned off again at any time. If More → AI says "AI is not set up on this server", no AI provider is connected and nothing is ever sent.
The two switches
Open More → AI. Only owners and admins can change the switches; others see "Only an owner or admin can change these."
| Switch | Lets AI read |
|---|---|
| Metadata features | Names, descriptions and column types, never row values |
| Figures features | Also aggregated figures, such as a chart's totals. Needs Metadata features on first |
Turning Metadata features off turns Figures features off with it.
What each feature sends
The AI page lists every feature with what it sends.
| Feature | What it does | Sends |
|---|---|---|
| Ask Vantage | Turns a question into a query on your metrics and charts the answer | Metadata |
| Draft a dashboard | Writes a draft dashboard from a prompt | Metadata |
| Model assistant | Suggests titles, descriptions, formats, ratio measures and joins for a dataset | Metadata |
| SQL copilot | Writes, explains and fixes read-only SQL | Metadata |
| Explain this error | Explains a query, SQL or sync error and how to fix it | Metadata |
| Starter packs | Drafts views, models and dashboards for your data, or maps a template onto your columns | Metadata |
| Explain this chart | Summarises what a chart or dashboard shows | Figures |
| Weekly change digest | Finds the week's notable metric changes and summarises them | Figures |
| MCP server | Offers your metrics as tools to your own AI agents | Nothing to Anthropic |
Metadata is what you type (the question, prompt or SQL) and your workspace's model: the names, titles, types and descriptions of datasets, columns, measures and dimensions.
What AI never sees
- Your rows. Ask and the dashboard drafter send only the model; Vantage runs the query itself and the answer is drawn in your browser. When you name a value such as a facility, Vantage matches it against your data on its own servers.
- Members marked Hidden in a metric model, and anything in projects the person asking is not a member of.
- Values inside error messages. Before an error goes to Explain this error or the SQL
copilot, anything in quotes becomes
'<value>'and any run of five or more digits becomes<number>.
With Figures features on, two features also send aggregated figures, never the rows they were added up from. Explain this chart sends the totals a chart shows, at most 200 rows for each of at most 12 charts. The weekly digest sends each changed measure's value for the week, the week before, and the change between them.
Cost and limits
Each use counts against the workspace's monthly AI actions, shown on the AI page as "used this month": one for most features, three for a dashboard draft or starter pack. The plan sets the allowance: 50 on the trial, 150 on Starter, 600 on Growth and 2,000 on Business. When it is used up, AI features say so and name the plan that lifts it.
