Ask a question
How do I ask in plain words and check how the answer was built?
Elly is on the phone with the Industrial Area Hub manager, who asks how last month went. Rather than build a chart, she asks Vantage in plain words and checks how it worked the answer out.
Before you start
AI is off until a workspace owner or admin turns it on: open More → AI and switch on Metadata features. Until then the Ask Vantage button is not in the top bar. If AI says "AI is not set up on this server", whoever runs Vantage has not connected an AI provider.
You need to be a member of at least one project. Ask answers from the metric models of the projects you belong to and the workspace's shared datasets, never from projects you are not in. Measures and dimensions marked Hidden in a metric model are left out.
Each question uses one AI action from the workspace's monthly allowance, which the plan sets: 50 on the trial, 150 on Starter, 600 on Growth and 2,000 on Business.
Ask
- Select Ask Vantage in the top bar, or press Ctrl K (⌘K on a Mac).
- Type the question, here "Revenue by facility last month", and press Enter. Under Try, Vantage suggests questions built from your own measures; select one to ask it.
A question can be up to 500 characters. While Vantage works it shows Thinking….
Read the answer
The answer has a short title, the period it covers (such as last month, or All time when the question gives none), a sentence or two on what was added up or counted, and a chart: a single number, a line over time, bars to compare, a pie for shares, or a table. A long answer shows "Showing the first 5,000 rows".
Under the chart, open How this was calculated to check it:
| Line | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Metrics | The measures and dimensions used, by their model names, such as sales.revenue and sales.facility |
| Time range | The period |
| Filter | Each filter applied, such as sales.facility equals Industrial Area Hub |
| Grouped by | The date and grain, such as sales.order_date by month |
| Row limit | Any limit on the number of rows |
Below those is the exact query Vantage ran, with Copy Cube query to reuse it. The answer is marked "AI-generated · check against the cited query".
When you name a value, such as a facility, Vantage matches it to the values stored in your data. If nothing matches, it says so, for example "No Facility called "Karen"." rather than guessing.
Correct it
If the answer is not what you meant, select Not what I meant, say what you meant in What did you mean?, and select Retry. Vantage asks again with your correction and its previous query; this uses another AI action.
If no measure answers the question, Vantage says so in a sentence ("No metric in this workspace measures that." or its own reason) and lists the Closest measures it found. Add the measure to a metric model (see Metric models) and ask again.
Keep the answer
Select Add to dashboard draft and choose a dashboard in the project. Vantage adds the chart to that dashboard's draft and says "Added to the draft of" and its name; publish the dashboard for others to see it (see Publish). The option is not offered when the answer mixes data from more than one project.
