Make your own pack

How do I turn my models and dashboards into a reusable pack?

Elly's metric models and dashboards for Westlands Trading now work the way her team wants. She would like them kept as a pack, so a new project can start from the same set and get updates later.

Vantage makes a pack in two ways: AI drafts one from your data, or you export your metric models and dashboards as files and build a template from them by hand. You need the editor or admin role in the project.

Draft a pack with AI

With AI on for the workspace (see What the AI can see), Catalog offers two starting points:

ButtonWhereWhat AI drafts
Draft a starter pack from your dataTop of CatalogViews, models and dashboards for the project's datasets, from general patterns or a close template
Use with my dataOn a templateThe template's views, models and dashboards, mapped onto your datasets' columns

Either opens Your starter pack, marked "AI-generated · check before relying on it". Each item has Details; untick anything you do not want (items that depend on an unticked one are left out with it), then select Import. Regenerate drafts it again. Each draft costs 3 AI actions.

The pack lands under Your packs in Catalog and its dashboards in the current project. Each Import saves a new version, v1, v2 and so on, which Update then applies, keeping your edits as described in Registry packs and upgrades. Regenerate on the pack's card drafts the next version.

A pack under Your packs belongs to the project it was made in.

Export your models and dashboards

Without AI, take the pieces out as files.

  1. For each metric model: open Data, expand the source, select Metrics on the dataset, and select Export at the bottom of the page.
The bottom of the Sales metrics page: Performance with Speed up this dataset, then Save and Export
  1. For each dashboard: open it in the builder and select Export. Vantage saves the draft first, then downloads it.

Each downloads a JSON file named for what it holds, such as models-sales.json for the Sales model, or dashboards- followed by the dashboard's short name. A model that joins a dataset the project can no longer see cannot be exported, and Vantage says which join is in the way.

Build a template from the files

To bring the files into a project, add sample data and a manifest and import them as a template (see Import a template):

  • a manifest file naming the template: { "kind": "manifest", "key": "depot-sales", "name": "Depot sales", "description": "…" }
  • one sample file per dataset the models and dashboards read, with an id column, at most 5,000 rows
  • the exported model and dashboard files; a sample's slug must match the model's, here sales

Charts From SQL cannot go into a template: a template carries metric charts only.
